Train Host Appreciation Day PDF Print E-mail

Host Appreciation DaySome 35 active Train Hosts gathered at DiMillo's Restaurant in Portland to celebrate Train Host Appreciation Day. Hosts from as far away as Boston were in attendance.

The gathering heard from chairman Wayne Davis about the successes of the program and the continued goal of lending an informative, helping hand to Downeaster riders.

The Department of Homeland Security presented a video about secruity issues in this era of terrorism. The hosts were encouraged to act as another pair of eyes on the train, reporting to the conductors any suspicious behavior. It was a sobering presentation.

NNEPRA's Brian Beeler, the Downeaster's Passenger Service Manager, spoke to the gathering and read a letter from Exec. Dir. Patricia Quinn thanking the hosts for their service.

A new NNEPRA video was presented which featured riders explaining their reasons for taking "America's Favorite Train."

We encourage those who would like to become train hosts to contact TrainRiders/Northeast and join this band of Downeaster hospitality specialists. Our thanks to NNEPRA for supporting this luncheon.

I drove three of the "southerners" to the train (one Dover and two Boston). While on the drive back to the PTC, one of the hosts began talking about the Partners free medical bus service available at North Station. The other two hadn't heard of it and were delighted to acquire this information so they could pass it on to riders going to Boston for medical appointments.

Communities have their strengths, particularly when they get together in the same space.

The Annual Luncheon, sponsored by NNEPRA, is really the only opportunity we have to meet our fellow hosts and compare notes! A special Thank-You not only to those hosts who attended, but to Host Dispatcher Jim Oikle for always being on call and to Bob Rodman for his efforts as Program Coordinator, and Bill Lord, our Webmaster who has moved our communications into the 21st Century.

I join with the entire Board of Directors of TrainRiders/Northeast in expressing our deep appreciation for the work you all do to help make our Downeaster "America's Favorite Train".

Wayne E. Davis, Chairman, TNE

It is always a plus to be able to talk to other hosts and share experiences.
